The issues related to the respect of environment have always been a top priority for Cartiere Paolo Pigna S.p.A., historical company, leader of the paper industry since 1839. Pigna, confirming its commitment in supporting values for the environmental protection, has all the main certifications regarding the responsible management of the products from forests, according to strict environmental, economic and social principles ( FSC ®) and the environmental sustainability of the forest products themselves ( PEFC™).
Pigna has an Environment and Quality integrated Management System certificated for all divisions according to the international standard UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 and UNI EN ISO 14001:2004, which confirms the application of international standards to improve business performance. These certifications witness the concrete will to control and, progressively, reduce the impact of our activities on the environment and to satisfy the requirements of the most careful customers. The certificates represent both an achievement and a starting point to develop an increasing environmental awareness through a more rational use of energy and renewable resources, a reduction of water waste, a collection and a proper treatment of waste and, of course, a continuous training and sensitization of all staff. Cartiere Paolo Pigna S.p.A. has integrated its Environment and Quality Management System, which has become SGSSL (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) and has obtained recognition for compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 standard. BS-OHSAS 18001:2007 is an internationally recognized standard to anticipate and manage safety risks at workplace. The compliance with OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification) international standard allows the company to better evaluate risks and improve performances. OHSAS 18001 is intended to systematize control, knowledge and awareness of all the possible risks involved in situations of ordinary and extraordinary operations. This certification focuses on the occupational health and safety management and requires the company a constant improvement, providing the guarantee of compliance with the safety policies specified. In addition to the certifications, to remain faithful to its commitment towards environment, Pigna developes stationery collections made from recycled paper, but also ecological envelopes, marked by the logo Pigna Nature. Pigna recycled paper, coming from selected paper waste, is eco friendly, because its production does not require the cutting of trees. Our timeless collections are a proof: Pigna Nature Flowers, which is primarily aimed at a female target and Pigna Nature Oxygen, dedicated to a male audience.
The FSC® label identifies products containing wood from forests managed correctly and responsibly according to strict environmental, social and economic standards. The forest of origin has been independently inspected and evaluated in accordance with these standards (principles and criteria of good forest management), established and approved from Forest Stewardship Council® through the participation and consent of the parties concerned.
The PEFC logo/label provides information on the origin of forest products from forests and other non-controversial sources managed in a sustainable way. Purchasers and potential purchasers can use this information to choose the product taking into consideration the environment as well as other elements. The main purpose of PEFC logo/label is to encourage demand and supply of those products that come from forests managed in a sustainable way, through the communication of an accurate and verifiable information that can not be misunderstood, and, therefore, to stimulate the potential market push through a continuous improvement of global forest resources.
The gradual disposal of paper mill has led to a substantial reduction in the industrial use of the river Serio, that through the local system of canals, crosses the entire compendium of Pigna. With the final closure of the mill, the impact of the release of treated water after their use has been totally eliminated. The respect of the regulation concerning the minimum vital flow made possible to release the source of water for any other use for the creation of sustainable energy and public use and has cancelled potential pollution risks arising from industrial use.
More than 1000 tons of ferrous materials have been disposed to new production uses.
Since 2003 the company complies with all parameters set by the acoustic zoning approved by the City of Alzano Lombardo. Direct noises coming from production have been furtherly reduced with the new production unit.
